Here is Kyle's current situation:
"If you don't find me at work, you'll probably find me at church. I'm always volunteering my time to work with the student and college ministry. Whether that means I've got to clean up after a high school service, or make announcements to 130 college students, I'm willing to do whatever is needed of me. I am always finding creative ways to draw new people to one of our student/college environments, whether it be through funny skits, crazy games, outreach, etc.
I play drums, percussion, guitar, and sing. If you catch me outside of work and church, you'll probably find me playing ultimate frisbee at CSU, working on church projects, or having fun downtown! My friends are my life! I don't know what I would do without them! When it's all said and done, no matter what I'm doing, I hope that my actions are declaring God's glory."
Here is Kyle's blog post:
"Currently, I work for Jersey Mikes. As crazy as it may sound, I actually enjoy my job! Personal interaction with people is what I strive for! And what better way, than to take orders from hungry people, right? I find people’s reaction to hunger just a little humorous, yet almost structured.
I've managed to categorize our customers into a five major categories.
1. Hungry, but happy These people come in with a smile on their face, and quickly start singing along with Journey's 1980's hit single "Anyway You Want It", playing on the radio. Ironically, that song becomes their anthem as they prepare to order the monstrous sub that will soon fulfill their hunger! Although hungry, they’re generally in a good mood and just ready to eat!
2. Hungry, but hurried These people seem to be stuck in fast forward. They're the ones who somehow "forgot" to pack a lunch, and they have 15 minutes to grab something, and rush back to their job. They are on a mission. Un-phased by the song on the radio, or by the weather outside, they dash to the counter. They stop for a moment, to catch their breath, and then yell out something that goes a little like this, "I'll have a number cha bla chicka chicka, no lettuce, himmer dimmer, heep, heep hop, banana peppers, flippity yum yum...and cut that in half." Not exactly English (or any other language at that!), just hunger, and it's impacting their ability to speak clearly.
3. Hungry, but confused These people need immediate attention. I usually recommend they open a bag of chips, and start eating them. Their hunger has cut off all brain activity, and they don't know what to do about it. They usually just look at the menu, look at me, look around, and repeat the process. It's often senseless to talk to them, because their hunger has already toned you out. These people just need time and space. Eventually, they come around, and place an order.
4. Not hungry, just a messenger You can distinguish these customers automatically. They've got a list. The list is usually on the back of an old Wal-Mart receipt or crammed onto two bright pink post-it notes. 15 people in an office voted for this 1 person to go pick up lunch. Overwhelmed by how picky some of their co-workers are, they start to just read off the list. No "Hello", no "How are you today?”, just commands. "Jerry wants a turkey on wheat with no cheese, bonnie wants a chicken wrap without the tomatoes..." the list goes on. As soon as they're done reading, they quickly ask "Do you just want the list?", as they hand it over the counter.
5. Hungry, and on time These people eat the same sandwich everyday. Just like clockwork, they'll stroll through the door at the same time they did the day before. They don't have to think about what they want. They probably didn't even put any thought into how they got to the shop. Their bodies are trained to do the same thing, day in, and day out. They've come to trust us with their order. So, instead of talking about what they want, they just start up conversation about whatever's on their mind.
Now, there may be customers who don't fit into these categories. And there are many customers who bounce from one category to another. They don't know their in a certain category, and they probably don't even care. They just want a good sandwich. That's where I come in. I can help them accomplish their goal! That's what makes my job so enjoyable. I love to help! And I'm glad there's diversity. It breaks the monotony or "normality".
If everyone were normal, life would not be enjoyable. The customers make every day delightful! Maybe you don't work at a sandwich shop, maybe you don't work at all. Or, possibly you're reading this from a cubicle, while the phone is ringing in the background, and your boss is demanding loads of work to be done yesterday. Maybe you’re in school, and reading this entry from the computer lab, while you should be working on a paper. Whatever you're doing, wherever you are, just take a second to think about the people around you. Appreciate the differences between you and everyone else. Then, if you get a chance, take some time to help someone. I can guarantee you’ll feel a little better after you do!
Kyle"
